They say every journey begins with a single step. Mine began with a notebook.
I was nine, perched on a crooked tree branch deep in the woods behind my childhood home in Federal Way, Washington. The scent of the redwood forest surrounded me—earthy, comforting, alive. That’s where I first fell in love with writing. Not in a classroom. Not at a desk. But in the hush between the trees, where the world felt wide open and my thoughts had space to stretch and soar.
Years later, that little girl—with her spiral notebook and wild curiosity—found herself listening to live music under the banyan tree at the Sheraton Moana Surfrider in Waikiki. The evening air smelled like saltwater and hibiscus, and I held a chilled glass of Plantation Iced Tea in my hand as the musicians played island melodies that wrapped around the night like a soft lei. For a moment, everything stilled. That familiar feeling returned—of being completely present, quietly moved, rooted in place.
And most recently, I felt it again in the most unexpected of places—Las Vegas. Not in the dazzling spectacle of Cirque or the buzz of casino floors, but at sunset outside the historic Plaza Hotel. With a rich chocolate-glazed donut from Pinkbox in hand—my favorite kind, just dark enough to feel decadent—I wandered past vintage neon signs glowing softly against the desert sky. The golden light filtered through old archways and across worn marble, casting long shadows and warm memories. A city famous for spectacle had, for a moment, softened its edges—and I stood still, savoring it.
That’s what this blog is about.
Hearts Across America isn’t just about places—it’s about presence. About letting the world slow down long enough to savor the sound of strings under a banyan tree, the scent of redwoods in your childhood, the sweetness of chocolate in a city known for its glitz. It’s about noticing the small, magical moments that stitch a place to your memory.
So wherever you are—in the quiet woods, by the beach, or somewhere in between—I hope you’ll travel with me. I’ll bring the stories. You bring your heart.
Let’s wander—with wonder.
